MY HIT LIST-The Execution of Lady Jane Grey by Paul Delaroche

Paul Delaroche

I'm no fine art connoisseur but the first time I saw this 1833 painting at The National Gallery I was overwhelmed by it. The scale and detail in it is amazing; it's like real people posing on a stage. it's poigniant and moving, poweful and subtle. Art historians talk of it's inaccuracy, but I don'rt really care about that. I'm just glad that it was discovered in 1973 after being feared lost in The Tate Gallery flood of 1928.
if you are in London and have an opportunity to see it in the flesh I heartily recommend it. In fact I think I'll  go down there later for another look at this magnificent piece.

A short film
An idea of scale
