True Romance on Valentines Day
On Valentines Day let’s look at the movie self referentially titled
True Romance; I would suggest that it sits atop of the Cool-o-meter. It has all the ingredients that are needed.
First the cast;
Christian Slater, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, James Gandalfini, Gary Oldman, Samuel L Jackson, Patricia Arquette, Tom Sizemore, Chris Penn, Brad Pitt and Val Kilmer as Elvis. Directed by Tony Scott, who is all about the style, and written by Quentin Tarantino this tale of a couple on the run features a Mexican stand off in which the nice guy, Michael Rappaport gets away unscathed and Bronson Pinchot updates his character from Beverly Hills Cop into a likeable social climber who will do anything for the Don Simpson style Hollywood producer, for whom he is essentially an errand boy, to make progress in Hollywood.
The list of characters feature hip names such as Clarence Worley Alabama Whitman, Drexl Spivey, Elliot Blitzer, Lee Donowitz and Vincenzo Coccotti
There are William Shatner, and The Mack references along with Kung Fu and Comic books. Music from the Big Bopper, and Badlands
Elvis, Drugs, Burgers and Funfairs, War movies and Italian Gangsters.
The humour and tension of the elevator scene and the amazing two hander between Hopper and Walken.
And it has the balls to go out on a happy ending!
A wonderfully entertaining film with a cast to die for. You've made me dig out my copy and I'll be watching it tonight!
