CURIOSITY CORNER 99and44/100 % dead

Old aged mob boss, Edmond O'Brien hires Richard Harris’hit man, sporting terrible glasses and a Gene Wilderesque hairstyle, to take out a rival Mobster. The movie itself is as strange as the title featuring albino alligators, and Chuck Connors playing a one-handed psycho who can fit  a variety of deadly weapons on his arm. It has chase scenes that are something of a Frankenheimer trademark (see Ronin). It has music by Henry Mancini and a mental title sequence. There are sleazy dancers, dynamite, bombs and Warner Brother cartoon style shenanigans to go along with the proliferation of avante garde images and motifs. It's strange indeed. It’s surreal, weird and camp and a must for curiosity corner.

WE'RE THE BAND PART 7: Love and other misdemeanours

Hayworth
The first girl that I was interested in was Kaye; she was easily the best looking girl at Highbury Hill Girls School, which was a short stroll from my all boys’ school. She was like a young Rita Hayworth with her red hair and voluptuous curves; in fact this was long before Cristina Hendricks of Mad men fame, but I think she probably looked like her at the same age. Kaye, I think, knew that she had something of a hold on us boys and wasn’t shy of a little bit of manipulation. Not with me though, we got on well and my many fumblings with other girls were triggered by my libido being aroused by her. Problem was that we were friends and at that point I didn’t have the bottle to take it further.
Hendricks
I was a bit like a rabbit in the headlights when I contemplated making the move that would change friendship into something else. I don’t think that in those days a day went past when I didn’t think about her. I would often be in her company as there were a group of us that went to The Champion pub on Upper Street and The Tiberton Arms on Essex Road. Our group of friends also were regular attendees of gigs by a local band called the Makers who would, after ditching the bass player, go on to be Spandau Ballet.

Ultimately friendship was the deal with Kaye and it taught me a valuable lesson; lay your cards down early. This reaped benefits with young women and gave me some interesting experiences. Then I met my first ‘serious’ girlfriend (you know commitment and all that) ironically her name was Kay (without the E). She was a blonde Debbie Harry-esque bombshell; a singer from sunny Portsmouth and therefore quite different from the London girls I had been knocking about with.
Looking back I was one of the first in our group to have a proper relationship and yet I still lived pretty much a single life. So it was that being smitten with Kaye became being in love with Kay (with some shenanigans in between).
Harry
It was during this relationship that I began my DJing career and it was a serendipitous arrangement as Kay owned a PA system that I was able to use on the mobile disco circuit. What I think I learned from these two girls with the same name was to stand me in good stead for the future. A future that was soon, after a rather wild period, to involve marriage.

To be continued…

WELLYOUSAYTHAT ALBUM LIFE LIST

Having recently celebrated a significant birthday I pondered on the music that had been important to me over the years. In terms of favourite songs and records the list would be impossible to arrange so I thought I would choose albums from over the course of my listening life that I have enjoyed and still find to be good coherent albums; not just a selection of songs thrown together. Many of my favourite performers have not produced a whole albums worth of quality even if they have unleashed single perfection, with this in mind I have tried to restrict these choices to one of each type of musical genre/theme and only one album per artist. I have also avoided the obvious where possible. So here it is my life list ten in alphabetical order…today’s version anyway

KATIE PIPER: MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS

Some TV has the ability to have an important and reflective effect on the viewer and so it was with Katie: My beautiful friends on Channel 4. The series has just ended and from the trailers it looked to be a reality show about disfigurement with a celebrity leaning and platitude heavy. What it was though, was a literal eye opener. Katie piper was a pretty young women who had got involved with, and managed to get untangled from, an obsessive and as a result the ex boyfriend had paid for a person of dubious morality, to throw acid in her face. A human being capable of doing such a thing deserves the most extreme of punishment as the results of this attack are simply horrific.

Throughout the show Katie Piper comes across as an intelligent and driven woman and not the bimbo that one could have expected and her absolute strength is quite incredible. A previous documentary had shown her coping with the early days of the event and the pain and suffering that went hand in hand with the attempts to piece her back together, both physically and mentally.

We see her meeting other people with a variety of facial and bodily disfigurement; some so extreme as to make one wonder how they are able to cope on a daily basis. What is so unfair about their situations is not the looks of the general public. but the fact that some of them tell of complete strangers making hurtful and twisted comments. Why would you do that? Why would you go out of your way to make someone feel terrible just because they look different?

The variety of different people with different appearances was an interesting counterpoint to automatically assuming saint hood on the ‘afflicted’. What they all showed, and Katie in particular, was courage and fortitude to survive emotionally intact. I don’t think that if I had to face what they do I would be able to deal with it in the same way.

Katie Piper seems to genuinely want to help both those that are disfigured and raise awareness; She did both and what I would love to say to her in person is “You are a terrific woman, good on you”

BIG TRAIN

After The Fast Show and before Little Britain was Big Train starring
Simon Pegg, Mark Heap, Kevin Eldon, Rebecca Front, Julia Davis, Phil Cornwall and Catherine Tate. This surreal sketch show is as good as any other sketch show that's been on the BBC. From the weekly animated staring contest to the domestic arrangements of Ming the Merciless, the medieval adventures of Keith Emerson to a terminator Tin Man, Big Train is a sketch show that was brimming with ideas. I enjoyed it and the cast have gone on to be successful in the comedy world. If sketch shows aren't your thing, look away now.

Banking Bullsh*t

That burning flame is your free will and decision making going up in smoke. The good people, and I use that term in the loosest possible way, at this bank love an arbitrary decision without notification. They like to tell you they’ve sent a letter when they haven’t, they enjoy telling you what they will and won’t allow you to do. They are passionate about keeping you waiting on the phone.  They are positively ecstatic about hidden charges and they absolutely will pass the buck. Sad and Dear is what they should be called.
