BLOKEISM # 8 GARY COOPER

Gary Cooper the original strong silent type without Cooper there would have been no role model for a number of actors. Cooper typified the unruffled hero; a man with guts and principles in High Noon an average Joe turned legend in Pride of the Yankees. A real man in the effete Hollywood landscape

BLOKEISM #7 DALEY THOMPSON

"Being a decathlete is like having ten girlfriends. You have to love them all, and you can't afford losing one"-Daley Thompson
Ruled the athletic World with a smile and an attitude. Funny, real and always up to something, Daley was an example to a generation of British athletes and he was a real fellah who seemed to take victory in his stride. He also scored one of the best goals to have graced Wembley, during a Pro/celeb game. Daley Thompson spokesman, athlete a real personality; he had the performances to back up his character. A real Winner.

BLOKEISM # 6 STANLEY BAKER

tribute

Close friend with Richard Burton this Welsh actor  was a life long Socialist, Heavy Smoker and a real man's man on Screen. Unlike the  matinee idols of the time Baker had a hard edge. He bought a hard edge and menace to his performances. A darkness seemed to lurk within. Baker was a rough Welshman who took to the screen with great ease and was a go to guy for the darker parts. happy to play unsympathetic characters, adept at bringing nuance to the screen. Stanley Baker was the quintessential British male, with a capital M, star of his time

BLOKEISM # 5 SEAN CONNERY

Vegas Gangster Johhny Stompanato flew to London in a rage, Sean Connery, he had heard, was making overtures to his girlfriend Lana Turner. Stompanato seethed in his rented house then decided to storm on set and confronted Connery gun in hand. Sean wrestled the gun out of Stompanato's hand and decked him with a right cross.

MY SH*T LIST: ITV

ITV has become the epitome of televisual dross. The debris of a dumbed down creative avalanche of dreck. Those that criticise Channel 5 or the numerous satellite channels are barking up the wrong tree; these stations are operating on a shoe string in comparison to the Independent Television big wigs who decide what the public gets. The ststion looks awful from its idents through to its choice of font. As a TV station it is styled to look like an Aldi store. ITV beams low intellect mish mashes of ideas in the shape of Ant & Dec, X Factor and numerous programmes that are cheap to make and generate income from phones voting and texting; they are fifteen minute adverts on either side of three minute commercial breaks. The drama's that are broadcast on ITV are generally formulaic and by the book, quizzes are pointless and there is a proliferation of 'an audience with...' shows that bring us C list entertainers spending an hour promoting their new product. ITV brings us shoddy and unoriginal 'entertainment' by the shed load.
As awful as ITV 1 is ITV 2 is the flagship of inanity. It is literally the televisual equivalent of a KFC Bargain bucket. ITV2 seems to have been invented to promote the growth of stupidity. A team of low slung jean wearing graduates cherry pick tripe to broadcast. Reality TV is a sign of the times and floods the airwaves but ITV2 takes it to nauseating celebrity depths. When future generations want to understand what led to the apocalypse that is going to inevitably result from our cultural plummet, they need look no further than the opposite of that moment when the first fish crawled out of the ocean a, grew legs and starting walking; When Fearne Cotton met Peaches Geldof. This is the lowest point in ITV2's all time output, and trust me that is saying something. Charlie Brooker beautifully analysed this septic spectacle on screen wipe
http://youtu.be/X-OatBpJq3E, succesfully capturing the sheer beastlieness of it all. If you listen carefully, when watching this debacle, you can hear a sound in the background; that's the sound of the Barbarian hordes on their way to Rome.

MY HATE LIST: Cherry Tree Lane

cherry tree lane
From Paul Andrew Williams, the director of the excellent London to Brighton, Cherry Tree Lane is a pointless exercise in screen violence. It leaves the viewer with the taste of bile in their mouth and a feeling of utter depression. I don't know what type of message or conclusion is trying to be made but after watching it I felt that I needed to take a shower. It has none of the resonance of Haneke's Funny Games ; which is clearly William's template. As shown in his debut film Williams is a talented director, but this film manages to leave the viewer thinking; "what was the point?"

BLOKEISM #2 Robert Shaw

 "ya follah?"
Robert Shaw, greatest Bond Villian Red Grant; the tear up that he and Connery have on the train in From Russia with Love is all the more explosive given the alpha male status of both actors. Excellent as a Nazi, historical character Spy gangster cop and of course Captain Quint. Shaw is the type of actor that is in scarce supply these days. A man's man with great talent and real character away from the lights‏

BLOKEISM # 1 Roger Vadim

Roger Vadim.
Journalist, actor, writer, Director, legend. His most famous partners were Bardot, Fonda and Denueve. Not bad eh? He made it to 72 and this French lothario has a pretty impressive CV both of women and Kitsch/avante garde movies.

DON'T BUY TOP POTTER RINGS

Sometimes things that are eulogised become annoying. That annoyance is generally based on two things; the fact that you don’t get what all the fuss is about and the realisation that the item of zeitgeist is a huge steaming pile of excrement. Obviously readers of this Blog can empathise with my complete contempt towards Top Gear; the worst Television show of all time based on its target audience and the audience it systematically excludes.

Aside from Top Gear there is a cinematic and literally case in point, The Harry Potter franchise; adequate children’s books, average special effects laden movies, and paint by numbers content. Yet the amount of adults happily amercing themselves, nay ingratiating themselves into the world of Rowling, is a classic example of the Naked Emperor syndrome. Yet Potter pales into insignificance compared to the hypnotic pseudo spiritual world of the Lord of the rings movies.

Never has a series of movies been lauded, without respect of content, merit and cinematic values as this trilogy of trite tripe. Peter Jackson seems to be good at one thing only as a director; the genre of running away from things, stopping for a tussle with things, then running away from things again,. It’s like some sort of directorial Groundhog Day.

But these franchises say a lot. What they tell us is that you can fool most of the people most of the time. Top Gear, LOTR, Potter etc are all a part of the conglomerated and perceived view of what appeals to the arbiters of cultural taste. Those arbiters of course being ironic; as they love to be.

Those movies/books/TV shows that I am referring to are, of course, the latest in a line of side show geeks pitching Snake oil, only this time the architects of taste are informing the audience by dint of a belief that we all need cultural guidance.

I say, don’t buy into it. Recognise these products for what they are. It’s okay to be in the minority. It’s okay to not be that interested in cars. It’s okay to feel apathetic about reading children’s books. It’s fine to not engage with Elves and protracted scenes of overblown battle. Choose to not engage with the definers of taste.

All being said and done I don’t like Top Gear; it annoys me. I don’t like Lord of the Rings; the movies are mind numbing and effects driven. I don’t like Harry Potter books; they are storytelling by number, For kids. I don’t like the Harry Potter movies; they are basically Simpson/Bruckheimer movies with sheen of culture. And that's all it is; a sheen.

The Divine Trinity(alphabetically)-Mad Men/The Sopranos/The Wire

Time for a reappraisal of how good these three shows were/are.

In any reckoning these three TV shows are the best that has been seen. Comparisons are inevitable yet futile.

Mad men is set in the past and like the Sopranos uses flashback and glimpses into the internal minds eye, whereas The Wire has a real time narrative and does not employ any insight into past and dream states.

What they do have in common is quality. Quality in writing, casting and attention to detail. They all take the art of subtlety to new heights, particularly in the time given to character development.
Mad Men
The Sopranos and Mad Men have ensemble casts that orbit a lead character and The Wire does too, but to a lesser degree as McNulty does not have the importance of Tony or Don/Richard in terms of plot development.

What they each bring is a sense of involvement and commitment. To speak of their greatness is by no means exaggerating and I would put the numerous episodes as bodies of work right up there with the cinematic greats like The Godfather, Casablanca or Goodfellas
The Sopranos
I have watched The Sopranos and the Wire in their entirety twice and am currently amid the exploits at Sterling Cooper again and again. All three are masterpieces of TV and I cannot praise them highly enough
The Wire
In a world where Tarantino directed a double episode of CSI  I could imagine David Lynch directing an episode of Mad Men, Spike Lee doing The Wire and of course Scorsese The Sopranos and those great directors would be faced with a challenge.

Spike Lee doing The Wire
and of course Scorsese The Sopranos
or David Lynch directing an episode of Mad Men
