THE INCREDIBLE HULK 1971

In 1971 The marvel comic book The Incredible Hulk had a run of stories that took an otherwise one dimensional character and injected storytelling that made the green beast interesting. Roy Thomas and Herb Trimpe were on great form and  Harlan Elison had a stint as writer .The issues released that year where a strong indicator of how a basically silly character could be used to represent the everyman. Whereas the focus on Hulk's alter ego, Bruce Banner, had been where the human interest was, these issues focus on the Hulk and in doing so portrayed the basic tragedy of the character. Hand in hand with this depth was a great deal of fun and action therefore delivering entertainement to all readers.

This Paul Weller composed single from The Jam is one of my favourites. It's of the high tempo associated with The Jam, particularly in their earlier days and is dynamic and thoughtfull in it's lyrics. The B side written by Bruce Foxton is a fine song also and this single's two sides nicely showcased The Jam's talents.

MY HIT LIST: RONIN

1983 the year that Frank Miller released Ronin. This book is probably the most overlooked of works as it predated the genre changing The Dark Knight returns. It is a cyber punk tale of immortality fuedal Japan and the future. Beautifully put together, it is worthy of rediscovery. Like most of Miller's work it has a stylised sense of self and is more detailed than his later work. A ripping story, great art and a tremendous pay off.
