"Sidewalk theater" is how Willis describes this 1963 New York image of Malcolm X taken by Gordon Parks. The Black Power leader was selling a special issue of Muhammad Speaks, the Nation of Islam's official newspaper, that graphically illustrated an episode of police brutality in Los Angeles. Malcolm X "picked a central place to stand, knowing there are people in and out of this store," Willis says."He found a place to tell this story."
