How do you follow up a movie of real originality and iconic status?
You take all the key ingredients and amplify them.
James Cameron's Aliens is a smart follow up to Alien. It acknowledges its predecessor and creates it's own ethos.
It increases the action yet stays focused on characterisation. It addresses the issues of the first movie in quiet moments between the action. It answers some questions and expands upon Ripley's character. It reiterates the corporate greed touched upon in the first movie and gives us a 'needs must' family group where Newt replaces Jones as the child.
Aliens is a great movie; visceral yet intelligent, action packed but thoughtful.
It's almost a blueprint on how to follow up a cinematic masterpiece.
