The Forties and Fifties were the great age of the Hollywood beauty and the sixties and seventies saw a transformation of the accepted idea of that beauty. Post Marilyn, Raquel Welch typified the new age. Great actress? Nope. Sex symbol? yes.
The thing with Raquel is that she seemed to be having fun and as she has got older comes across as a nice woman.
Yes Raquel is an overlooked icon but you've only to watch the Shawshank Redemption to see how comfortably she sits alongside Andy Dufresne's time marking/escape hatch gallery of beauties; Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe. She still looks good now.
She fitted right into the Playboy magazine aesthetic, the swing of sixties Vegas and the bravado of Britain, where she was extremely popular.
And let's face it there has never been a sexier cavewoman. Ever!
