Anthemic punk songs taking the Springsteen approach to building a song to try and capture an essence. Here are some of those songs that tried to expand the 3 minute pop song template, with varying levels of success, and varying levels of credibility within a scene that was very fragmented. These, by and large, came a couple of years after the 'glory years' of '76 and '77 and showed the pop leanings that led into the 80's domination of the so called New Wave.

The Ruts-West One (Shine on me)
The Clash-Stay Free
Generation X –Kiss me deadly
Penetration-Life's a Gamble
The Boys-Brickfield nights
