SHORT AND SWEET: Danny Snyder

Sleepers is an under rated movie with an excellent cast and Danny Snyder is a character that steals the show; a down at heel lawyer called upon to take a case and win it. A case where the people who he is defending are guilty. Snyder shows that beneath the air of resignation and defeat he still has what it takes. Great stuff

SHORT AND SWEET: JIMMY KATZ

A superb scene from the superb Mulholland Drive with a great performance from Naomi Watts in particular in the audition scene where her character Betty performs alongside Jimmy. Essential cinema from David Lynch.

SHORT AND SWEET: AGENT MONK

Agent Monk appears in Alan Parker's Mississippi Burning and makes a superb point to the abductedMayor of a Racist Town. This is story he tells with the result that the mayor spills his guts.

“You. I'm gonna tell you a story. A kid named Homer Wilkes lives 30 miles north of here. He'd just taken his girlfriend home and was walking along the road. A truck pulls up beside him. Four white boys took him for a ride. Now Homer, he hadn't done anything, except be a Negro. They took him to a shack, a regular old shack like this one. Then they took out a razor blade.
Ragged old razor blade, like this one. They pulled down his pants, they spread his legs, and they sliced off his scrotum.
Then they put it in a coffee cup, like this one. Mayor, do you know how much you bleed when someone cuts off your balls?
HUH! When they found Homer, he looked like he head been dipped in blood up to his waist. He was barely alive when they got him to the hospital, and he can barely walk now.”

SHORT AND SWEET: ULLA

There's something about Ulla
The Sublime Mel Brooks 1968 production The producers is chock full of amazing and quirky characters; Roger DeBris, Franz Liebkind, The Consierge,Lorenzo St DuBois, Hold me Touch me along with Biallystock and Bloom, but there is definitely something about  Ulla Inga tor Hansen Benson Yansen Tallen Hallen Svaden Swanson Bloom. The most well known Musical portrayal is by Cady Huffman, who is excellent in Curb your Enthusiasm playing herself, then in the inferior Movie version of the musical Uma Thurman brings her unique appeal, but the original version, Lee Meredith nails the role of the sexy Swede.

SHORT AND SWEET: SYLVESTER MARCUS

Sylvester Marcus in It's a mad mad mad mad world

The Predecessor to Lorenzo St DuBois, Sylvester is an out and out nut. In this star studded comedy movie he is a stand out as the unhinged son of Mrs Marcus.

SHORT AND SWEET: HUGO STIGLITZ

There are characters who pop up for brief screen time but stay in the memory, so join me as I start this occasional series with Hugo Stiglitz.
A Character in  Inglorious Basterds Hugo Stiglitz is named after a Mexican Movie star and is a psychotic strong silent type. I would like to have seen more of him in Tarantino's underrated war movie. His back story and clips of his exploits kind of tell their own story But for his brief time on screen he is a terrific character.

Re-evaluating the nineties

I have always thought of the nineties as a bland era in artistic terms yet reflecting on the movies of the decade it was quite a time. The Blockbuster still retained some substance and genuine fun; unlike the post LOTR era that followed when big office equates with crassness. Mainstream movies were also still credible and not commercially driven lightweight fare. Independent movies re stated themselves as did foreign language films. The Decade began with Goodfellas and ended with American beauty, in between we saw the arrival of Singer, Gallo, Lassiter, Haneke, Miike, Tarantino and Fincher and the return of Mallick. Established Directors also produced some great work Scorsese, Mann, Altman, Leigh and Cameron.

Treats from the nineties

Heat, LA Confidential
Lone Star, Funny Games
Run Lola Run, Being John Malkovich
Reservoir dogs, Pulp Fiction
Audition, Ring
Boogie Nights, The Ice Storm
Chungking Express, Secrets and lies
Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan
Happiness, Magnolia
The Player, The Shawshank Redemption
Goodfellas, Casino
King of New York, Boyz ‘n the hood
Delicatessen, The Silence of the lambs
Unforgiven, Dances with Wolves
Slacker, Clerks
Glengarry Glen Ross, Philadelphia
Groundhog Day, There’s something about Mary
Festen, Pi
Jurassic park, Terminator II
Se7en, Henry portrait of a serial killer
The Piano, Buffalo 66
The Lion king, Toy Story
The Last Seduction, The Usual Suspects
Fight Club, Trainspotting
Three Kings, The Thin Red Line

A good decade at the movies that shows how poor the last decade has been.  The nineties was possibly the ‘new eighties’
